Bio

 

 

Jonathan Hindmarsh is an award-winning Australian costume designer. He graduated from NIDA’s Bachelor of Dramatic Arts in 2015 and is the recipient of the 2018 Green Room Award for Design and the 2018 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Costume Design.

Jonathan is, to his core, a storyteller. He believes in the importance of the beautiful human instinct for sharing experiences and stories in the pursuit of delight, entertainment, compassion, education, and connection. Costume design is Jonathan’s humble, joyous contribution to the art of storytelling.

Jonathan’s recent design work includes costumes for Extension to Boom, a new work choreographed by George Williamson for the West Australian Ballet (2024), Miss Peony for Belvoir St Theatre (2023), Lady Tabouli, programmed for Sydney Festival 2020, A View from the Bridge (Ensemble 2019), Pomona (Red Stitch 2019), Trevor (2019), The Astral Plane (Belvoir 25A 2019), Grounded (2019), costumes for West Australian Ballet’s Reincarnation, choreographed by Garry Stewart (2019), Brisbane Festival’s I’ve Been Meaning to Ask You (2018), the Australian premiere of The Humans (2018), the Green Room Award winning Apokalypsis (2018), Kill Climate Deniers (2018) and Metamorphoses (2018). For the Old Fitz Theatre in 2017 Jonathan designed DoubtCrimes of the Heart and The Judas Kiss. His work also includes designs for Look Back in Anger (2016), Low Level Panic (2016), Sport For Jove’s Away (2016) and Belleville (2016).

Since 2020, Jonathan has moved into the big wide world of film and television, working in the costume department for productions including Shang Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings (Marvel), Pieces of Her (Netflix), The Twelve (Binge) and the upcoming Mad Max feature film Furiosa, and The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. In 2024, Jonathan was the Assistant Costume Designer to Academy Award winner Tim Chappel on Dancing With the Stars, The Masked Singer and Gladiators.
